COURSE DESCRIPTION (DESCRIZIONE DEL CORSO)

The Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA) is a Rasch-based instrument that measures and describes the effectiveness with which a child who has unilateral disability makes use of their affected hand (assisting hand) during bimanual activities. The AHA is a standardised criterion-referenced test that is valid, reliable and sensitive to change. The test is intended for children with unilateral cerebral palsy and brachial plexus injuries aged between 18 months and 18 years.

L’Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA) è uno strumento, basato sul modello di Rasch, che misura e descrive l’efficacia con cui un bambino con disabilità unilaterale utilizza la mano interessata (mano di assistenza) durante le attività bimanuali. L’AHA è un test standardizzato, basato su criteri di riferimento, valido, affidabile e sensibile al cambiamento. Il test è destinato a bambini con paralisi cerebrale unilaterale e lesioni del plesso brachiale di età compresa tra 18 mesi e 18 anni.

The online course covers reliable administration of the AHA assessment, version 5.0 and is organised in two phases. First, a 3-day training course includes information about the test construct, testing procedure and scoring practice on a range of children from videos. A manual with detailed scoring criteria and a computer-based scoring form is provided. The second part of the certification process occurs after the workshop. To achieve certification, the participant is to complete calibration cases and achieve satisfactory results. Some of these are from standardised videos, and some are self-produced AHA play sessions (2). Each course participant will receive individual, detailed feedback. This whole procedure should be completed within three months and leads to rater certification.

Il corso in presenza copre la somministrazione affidabile della scala AHA versione 5.0 ed è organizzato in due fasi. Innanzitutto, un corso di formazione della durata di 3 giorni che comprende: informazioni sulla struttura del test, sulla procedura del test e su sessioni pratiche di valutazione di una serie di bambini utilizzando dei video. Viene fornito un manuale con criteri di punteggio dettagliati e un foglio di valutazione computerizzato. La seconda parte del processo di certificazione è individuale e si svolge dopo il workshop. Per ottenere la certificazione, il partecipante deve completare casi di calibrazione e ottenere risultati soddisfacenti. Una parte di questi da video standardizzati e un’altra parte da sessioni di gioco AHA realizzate dal partecipante (2). Ogni partecipante al corso riceverà un feedback individuale dettagliato. Questa intera procedura dovrebbe essere completata entro tre mesi e porta alla certificazione del valutatore.

Please note that if you do not successfully meet the certification requirements or complete this process within the three-month time frame, you will not achieve AHA 18-18 rater certification. You will need to register and pay to undertake another course if you wish to pursue AHA 18-18 rater certification in the future.

To be able to perform the self-produced AHA assessment, you will need access to an AHA test kit and at least 2 children with unilateral upper limb impairment. The AHA test kit for children between 18 months and 12 years with specific toys, and/or the new board game for teenagers can be ordered from www.cpteaching.com

COURSE OBJECTIVES (OBIETTIVI DEL CORSO)

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the setup, conduct and video record an Assisting Hand Assessment session.
2. Produce reliable scores according to the criteria in the manual (AHA Version 5.0)
3. Verbalize the concept and construct of the test and its psychometric properties.
4. Interpret and communicate the outcome of the test.

Al termine di questo corso, i partecipanti saranno in grado di:

1. Dimostrare come si prepara, si conduce e si videoregistra una sessione di valutazione AHA 
2. Produrre punteggi affidabili secondo i criteri del manuale (AHA versione 5.0)
3. Verbalizzare concetto e costrutto del test e le sue proprietà psicometriche.
4. Interpretare e comunicare l’esito del test.
