COURSE DESCRIPTION

This two-session online training course is designed for clinicians working with children with neurological impairment, focusing on the rationale for using Botulinum toxin-A (BoNT-A) as an adjunct to upper limb rehabilitation. Drawing on the latest scientific evidence alongside 25+ years of clinical experience in upper limb BoNT-A use, this theoretical and practical course will help clinicians determine who, when, and why to consider BoNT-A as part of evidence-based upper limb intervention.

Session 1

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the latest concepts and terminology used to characterise muscle overactivity in children with neurological impairment.
2. Identify and assess children with upper limb impairment who may benefit from BoNT-A intervention.
3. Explain the aims of upper limb BoNT-A injection in children, including functional and symptom-management goals.
4. Justify the selection of specific upper limb muscles for BoNT-A injection based on clinical assessment findings.
5. Differentiate between children likely to benefit from BoNT-A and those for whom other impairment-based interventions may be more appropriate.
