Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This certification course introduces the Upper Limb-Motor Learning Strategy Tool (UL-MLST), a valid, reliable, and clinically useful tool for clinicians working with children with cerebral palsy (CP) and their families. This self-paced training program has been developed to guide participants on how to effectively implement motor learning strategies within the evidence-based, task-focused models of upper limb therapy.

The UL-MLST provides a comprehensive package of resources that consolidates a wide range of motor learning elements and strategies derived from various theoretical frameworks into a practical tool that is aligned with evidence-based upper limb therapy approaches for children with CP. The suite of UL-MLST resources includes a self-paced Online Training Program, a Manual, and a self-reflection Checklist. These provide a structured framework to guide clinicians on how to implement and document the motor learning strategies used in task-focused models of upper limb therapy. The training program includes video-based scenarios to visually demonstrate each motor learning strategy and how they could be used in clinical practice.

Due to the complexity of motor learning strategies, this Online Training Program and a 3-hour live session have been developed as part of the UL-MLST certification procedure. It consists of two steps that must be completed within the specified two-month time frame listed below. Please note that certification will not be achieved if all requirements are not completed within the timeframes below.

STEP 1: Tuesday 15th September to Sunday 8th November 2026

In Step 1, participants will be required to complete the self-paced Online Training Program within the specified two-month period. The Online Training Program is based on self-paced learning via an online Learning Management System. This format allows participants to complete the training at their own pace. Step 1 will take approximately 10 hours to complete.

The Online Training Program consists of 4 modules (see Figure below) and includes lectures on topics such as the key considerations when selecting, manipulating, and implementing motor learning strategies in clinical practice. Each module includes either one or several related lessons designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the corresponding topics. Participants will be required to complete the corresponding knowledge tests immediately after finishing each module. This structured approach ensures that participants engage with the content meaningfully and consolidate their learning before moving on to the next topic. Each motor learning element and related strategies will be presented along with video examples demonstrating how to effectively apply them. Participants will be introduced to each UL-MLST resource during the self-guided learning process. The Manual and Checklist are downloadable resources, and participants will learn how to use these in their practice.

In module 4, participants will be required to use the UL-MLST Manual and self-reflection Checklist documents to identify the motor learning strategies applied in two video-recorded play sessions of children with CP.

To successfully achieve UL-MLST certification, participants must complete the Online Training Program within the defined two-month period and pass the knowledge tests after each module. Participants will not be permitted to progress to Step 2 if they have not completed the requirements for Step 1 by the due date.

Learning Management System access for Step 1: Monday 30th March to Friday 22nd May 2026

You must complete all the requirements for Step 1 by Friday, 22nd May 2026 to progress to Step 2. No extension will be granted under any circumstances.

STEP 2: Tuesday 10th November: 8:00am to 11:00am (London), 9:00am to 12:00pm (Berlin), 7:00pm to 10:00pm (Melbourne)

To check your local time zone, please refer to https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meeting.html

Attendance at this 3-hour live forum is a compulsory requirement to obtain certification for the UL-MLST. Following the successful completion of the requirements for Step 1, participants will be required to attend a 3-hour live online forum via Zoom with the course instructors. This forum allows participants to discuss their ratings of the motor learning strategies applied in the two video-recorded play sessions completed in Module 4. These will be compared with the ratings given by the course instructors. During the forum, participants will also have the opportunity to discuss any other questions about the UL-MLST with the course instructors.

After completing the requirements for Step 1 and Step 2, participants will receive UL-MLST certification.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the dominant theories in the field of motor learning.
  2. Undertsand the rationale for the development of the Upper Limb-Motor Learning Strategy Tool (UL-MLST).
  3. Understand motor learning key considerations, principles, elements and strategies.
  4. Define and recognise distinct motor learning strategies used in evidence-based, task-focused models of upper limb therapy for children with cerebral palsy.
  5. Undertsand when, how and why to consider the use of specific motor learning strategies in clinical practice.
  6. Access and appropriately use the UL-MLST resources, including the Manual and a self-reflection Checklist, in clinical practice.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Dr Atefeh Taghizedah and Adjunct Associate Professor Brian Hoare

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Eight weeks of access to the UL-MLST learning management system and all associated UL-MLST resources, including the Manual and Checklist. Participation in a 3-hour live forum to discuss the use of the UL-MLST and any other related issues for use in clinical practice. COURSE REGISTRATION

Please note, CPTeaching has a strict policy of not holding places for courses. All registrations must be processed via the CPTeaching website. Payment must be received in full before the course commencement date.

NEED AN INVOICE OR PROCESS PAYMENT VIA PURCHASE ORDER?

To obtain an invoice, please register via the website and select bank transfer as the method of payment. You will then receive an automated reply email with an invoice that contains the information you entered during the registration process. If you do not receive the email in your inbox shortly after registration, the email may have been filtered to your spam or junk mail folder.

To obtain an invoice for payment via a Purchase Order, please select Purchase Order as the method of payment. Please do not send a Purchase Order before registration on the course site. It will not be accepted. You, or a nominated person in your organisation, will then receive an invoice via email. Please note that there is a 10% surcharge applied for all payments processed by Purchase Order. This surcharge is applied due to the significant administration requirements to receive payment and to cover bank transfer fees, which your organisation will pass on to CPTeaching.

Please note that we will not accept payment via Purchase Order within 1 month from the course commencement date due to the delays in receiving payment.

WANT TO PAY BY CREDIT CARD?
